We the members of Dr. B. C. Roy Engineering College and the Group of Institutions deeply mourn that the great icon of Bengalis, the heart - throb of millions of people, Soumitra Chattopadhyay has left us at his 85, after an illness of forty days. He was an actor, poet, dramatist, director, painter, reciter and essayist. In his 60 years of life in flimography since 1959, he acted in 250 films of diverse characters which always enthralled the audiences. He received several awards in his life. Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Film Fare Lifetime Achievement Award of East and that of South, Sangeet Natok Academy Award, and seven National Film Fare Awards and the National Film Award for Best Actor for his acting in the film PODDOKHEP. Not only from our own country but this thespin was honoured from abroad also. He was the first Indian to receive the “ Officier des Arts et Martis” the highest award for arts given by the French Government in 1999. Recently he was awarded the highest civilian award of France, the Legion of Honour or “ Chevalier de la Legion d' Honneur" which was introduced by Napolean Bonaparte in 1802.
Soumitra Chottopadhyay was the concience, emotion and morale of Bengal as well as India. He was fond of Mahabharata and it was the influence of that Epic that he would tell “ I do not bother for what I get, I only want to do work until my last breath” which was advised to Arjuna by the Lord Krishna.
We, Dr. B. C. Roy Engineering College and the Group of Institutions, were fortunate enough to have this legend within us in our Dr. B. C. Roy Engineering College campus on 31st August 2018 to inaugurate the grand auditorium in the name of our first President of the society late Shri Dulal Mitra.
We are proud that we will cherish the name of this great legend etched in our College Campus for ever to inspire us to fulfil our dedication to the education and the nation building. We pay our homage to this one of the greatest humanity of our times
